Industrial CT Metering Upgrades: Preparing Site Access, Shutdowns and Testing

This is a site-readiness guide for an assessed CT-metering project, not a design or wiring manual. Clear access and test responsibilities matter before the shutdown.

Start with an accepted technical scope

Current-transformer (CT) metering uses instrument transformers to provide measurements to the meter rather than passing the full supply current through a whole-current meter. Once the project has been assessed, site preparation should follow the accepted design and provider requirements. Do not buy CTs or choose ratios from a generic rule of thumb.

Confirm the relevant network connection acceptance, metering-provider scope and responsibilities for switchboard modifications and testing. A drawing issued for pricing is not necessarily approved for construction. Any change in supply capacity or equipment should be checked with the project’s responsible designers and providers before the shutdown proceeds.

Make switchroom access genuinely ready

Arrange controlled contractor access, site induction and a responsible facility contact. Provide current diagrams, equipment identification and any known hazards, including asbestos information where relevant. Work areas and access paths must be available without relying on production staff moving material after the shutdown begins.

Tell the team about generators, solar, batteries, UPS systems and possible alternative supplies. These can affect isolation and safe-work planning. Only qualified providers should determine isolation points and procedures; facility staff should supply information, not operate CT circuits or open metering compartments.

Site readiness before the agreed shutdown

  • Accepted drawings, work scope and named network/metering contacts.
  • Access permission, induction, permits and the facility’s authorised coordinator.
  • Current equipment identification and information about every energy source.
  • Production shutdown and restart procedures owned by the facility team.
  • Test, commissioning and document-handover responsibilities agreed in advance.

Define commissioning evidence before work starts

Ask the appointed metering provider and electrical team what tests and records are required for this installation. The project may need confirmation of equipment details, the metering configuration and the applicable commissioning results. This guide does not prescribe test sequences, secondary wiring or CT handling procedures.

Our industrial CT metering upgrade coordination service aligns the site works and provider handoffs with the facility team. The planned duration depends on the actual design, access, isolation and testing scope; no fixed restoration time or zero-downtime promise should replace those checks.

Keep the technical and operational handovers separate

Before production resumes, obtain the electrical and metering handover appropriate to the work. Keep revised diagrams, installed equipment identification, relevant compliance records and commissioning documentation. Ask who confirms the metering configuration in market records and who handles the retailer’s account update.

The facility’s operators must also check their production systems under their own approved restart procedures. Power restored to the board does not mean refrigeration, controls or process equipment is ready. Compare the first relevant meter-data period with the retailer/provider if there is a concern; staff should never alter CT circuits or settings to investigate billing.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Should we buy CT equipment before the design is confirmed?

No. The required equipment and configuration should come from the accepted project design and network/metering-provider requirements, not a generic threshold or assumed ratio.

Can facility staff check CT wiring if the bill looks wrong?

No. Do not open or alter CT or metering circuits. Report the concern through the retailer and appointed provider using the commissioning and data references.

Is electrical restoration the same as production restart?

No. The electrical team provides its technical handover; facility operators must complete the separate operational checks needed to resume production safely.

Prepare the site for the CT upgrade

Coordinate the accepted scope, facility access and commissioning handover before the shutdown is booked.
