How controlled load saves you money

A controlled load is a separately metered circuit that the network energises during off-peak periods — typically overnight. Because supply is restricted to those windows, retailers charge a much lower rate per kWh, often less than half the general usage rate.

Electric storage hot water systems are the classic candidate: they heat overnight on cheap power and hold hot water for the day.

Getting the wiring and metering right

Controlled load requires the appliance to be on its own dedicated circuit, correctly wired to the controlled-load metering element. Incorrect wiring means you are billed at full rates — or fail the metering provider’s inspection. We install the circuit, verify the configuration and coordinate the tariff assignment with your retailer.

Controlled Load FAQS

What appliances qualify for controlled load?

Typically fixed appliances that can run in off-peak windows: electric storage hot water, underfloor slab heating and, in some cases, pool pumps. Your retailer confirms tariff eligibility.

Does a smart meter support controlled load?

Yes — modern smart meters handle controlled load as a separate metering element without needing a second physical meter. We configure this during installation.
