Pool Pumps and Slab Heating on Controlled Load: Questions to Ask First

An appliance that can run at selected times may suit controlled load, but pool circulation and heating needs must be checked against the actual supply arrangement.

Eligibility is not just an appliance label

Controlled load applies to a separately arranged appliance circuit whose supply is available under defined switching conditions. Australian Government tariff guidance lists pool pumps and underfloor heating as possible uses, but that does not mean every pump or heating installation qualifies on every NSW network or retail plan.

Ask the retailer whether the appliance and proposed arrangement are eligible at your address, and ask the electrician to confirm the installation requirements. Get the current terms before paying for circuit changes. The appliance supplier also needs to confirm that the equipment can safely and effectively operate with interruptions to its supply.

Start with the pool or heating requirement

For a pool, discuss circulation and filtration requirements with the pool-equipment professional, including seasonal operation and the needs of associated controls. A variable-speed pump, sanitiser and controller may have interdependent requirements. A cheaper energy rate is not useful if the available operation does not meet the pool’s needs.

Slab heating stores heat in the building, but its suitability depends on the equipment and how the space is used. Ask the heating supplier about required operating periods, controls and recovery after interrupted supply. Do not connect equipment to a restricted supply simply because it is fixed in place or has a timer.

Confirm actual switching times

Controlled load should not be assumed to mean midnight-to-dawn electricity. Ausgrid’s current guidance describes changes to smart-meter controlled-load switching that use daytime solar generation; it also says switching times can vary. Other networks and plans need their own checks. Retailer time-of-use periods are a different concept from circuit energisation.

Our controlled-load circuit and metering service can review the physical arrangement once appliance suitability and tariff eligibility are established. We coordinate the relevant metering work and account handoff rather than promise a fixed operating window or automatic saving.

Ask before accepting the quote

  • Which controlled-load arrangement is available for this appliance at this address?
  • What supply periods are expected, and can they change?
  • Does the supplier accept those interruptions and the proposed controls?
  • What circuit, metering and account changes are required, and what do they cost?
  • How does the full annual plan cost compare with keeping the current arrangement?

Compare the whole plan and preserve the handover

Compare energy rates alongside additional charges and the cost of electrical work. Use realistic operating needs rather than a guaranteed percentage saving. A time-of-use plan or a different equipment schedule may be worth comparing, but neither is automatically equivalent to a dedicated controlled-load circuit.

After installation, keep the circuit information and ask the retailer to confirm the account arrangement. If operation changes unexpectedly, contact the relevant supplier, electrician or retailer with the dates and symptoms. Do not bypass controlled-load switching or alter wiring to keep the appliance running.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Can any pool pump use controlled load?

No blanket eligibility applies. Confirm the network/retailer terms, the electrical arrangement and the pump system’s required operating periods with qualified providers.

Is controlled load always overnight?

No. Switching arrangements can include daytime periods and may change. Confirm the arrangement for your address rather than relying on an old off-peak timetable.

Will controlled load definitely save money?

No. Compare the complete plan, operating needs and installation cost. A lower usage rate alone does not guarantee a lower total cost.

Check suitability before changing the circuit

Once your supplier and retailer confirm the requirements, arrange a review of the circuit and metering scope.
