A home battery’s economics depend entirely on timing: charge when energy is cheap or the sun is out, discharge through the expensive evening peak. On an old meter with no interval data and a flat tariff, that arbitrage doesn’t exist — the battery shifts energy around but the bill barely notices.
Metering issues also surface at installation: export limits, register configuration for solar-plus-battery systems, and switchboard capacity for the extra circuits.
A correctly configured smart meter records imports and exports in intervals, which is what lets a time-of-use or EV/battery-style tariff reward the battery’s behaviour. The metering needs to reflect the system design — solar and battery exports measured properly, controlled load kept on its register, and the board upgraded if the new circuits need space.
