The Problem: Supplies Too Big for Ordinary Meters

Standard “whole current” meters pass the full supply current through the meter itself, which works up to around 100 amps per phase. Larger commercial premises — warehouses, big retail, manufacturing, major fit-outs — draw far more than that, and fitting the wrong metering class stalls the connection application entirely.

This trips up businesses at the worst time: mid fit-out, with a network application rejected or an energisation on hold over metering requirements they’ve never heard of.

The Solution: Current Transformer (CT) Metering

CT metering measures indirectly: current transformers clamp around the main conductors and feed a scaled-down signal to the meter, which multiplies it back out. The result is accurate interval metering on supplies of practically any size, with the CTs, test links and meter installed to the network’s metering standards.

Designing and installing CT metering is specialist Level 2 work — CT sizing, wiring and commissioning must all satisfy the network. We deliver CT metering for commercial and industrial sites across Sydney, coordinating with your electrician, the network and the retailer.

How do I know if my site needs CT metering?

It’s driven by the supply size — broadly, supplies beyond the whole-current range (around 100A per phase) require CT metering. Your connection application and load schedule determine it; we can assess this from your electrical plans.

Can tenancies within a building have their own CT meters?

Yes — larger tenancies can be individually CT-metered, and smaller ones whole-current metered, within the same building. Tenancy metering design is part of what we scope.
