Do You Need a Level 2 Electrician to Install a Smart Meter?

Your regular electrician can wire your house — but in NSW, only a Level 2 ASP can carry out metering work that connects to the network.

The Problem: Your Electrician Can’t Touch the Meter

Many Sydney homeowners call a general electrician for a meter upgrade, only to be told partway through the job that the meter itself is off limits. In NSW, work on the service side of your installation — the meter, the service fuse and the connection to the network — is restricted to accredited Level 2 Authorised Service Providers.

That leaves people stuck: the switchboard is ready, the solar is on the roof or the granny flat is built, but nobody on site is authorised to complete the metering. The job stalls, and the retailer’s queue for a meter change can add weeks more.

The Solution: Use a Level 2 ASP From the Start

A Level 2 ASP is accredited by the network distributors to work on live network connections, install and relocate meters, and energise new connections. Smart Meter Australia holds Level 2 ASP accreditation across the Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy and Essential Energy networks, which covers all of Greater Sydney.

Booking a Level 2 ASP directly means one crew can handle the whole job — switchboard, service work and metering — instead of coordinating a general electrician, a retailer and a metering provider separately.

The Result: One Visit, Job Done

With the right accreditation on site, the whole scope can be planned as one coordinated job rather than a chain of separate providers, with the paperwork lodged correctly with your network and retailer.

If you’re unsure whether your job needs Level 2 work, call 0466 125 125 and describe what you’re doing — we’ll tell you straight away whether an ASP is required.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Is every meter job Level 2 work?

No. Work inside your switchboard on your side of the installation can be done by a licensed electrician. Anything involving the meter itself, the service fuse or the network connection requires a Level 2 ASP in NSW.

How do I check if an installer is a genuine Level 2 ASP?

Ask for their ASP authorisation number and which networks they are accredited on. A legitimate provider will give you both without hesitation.
