Ducted Air Conditioning and Induction Cooking: When to Assess Three-Phase Supply

The question is not whether induction or ducted air conditioning always needs three phase. It is whether your proposed equipment and combined loads suit the available supply.

Check the selected models, not the appliance category

Ducted air conditioners and induction cooktops are available with different electrical requirements. Ask the equipment supplier for the installation specifications of the exact models you plan to buy. A cooling or heating output rating is not the same as electrical input, and a product described as high performance does not necessarily require a three-phase connection.

Your electrician needs the specified supply, input requirements and manufacturer’s connection options. Do this before placing a non-refundable order. If the model requires three phase and the property does not have it, the installation project extends beyond running a new final circuit inside the home.

Look at the household at its busiest

The relevant scenario is often a hot evening: air conditioning running, dinner cooking and other household equipment in use. Add planned loads such as an EV charger, electric hot water or a pool to the assessment. Simply adding every nameplate rating does not replace a professional maximum-demand assessment, but the equipment list is useful input.

Tell the electrician how the home is used and which loads realistically run together. Existing tripping or lights dipping needs investigation; it is not proof that three phase is the only answer. A fault, protection issue or connection problem could require rectification independently of any capacity upgrade.

Information to collect before the quote

  • Exact air-conditioning and cooktop models, plus supplier installation requirements.
  • Existing and planned major appliances and their likely simultaneous use.
  • Known supply details and previous electrical plans, if available.
  • Renovation timing and any need to retain power for occupants.

Compare capacity and load-management options

The assessment may find the existing supply adequate, recommend a different appliance model or consider load management. Where more capacity or a three-phase-only appliance is justified, the network connection, consumer mains, switchboard and metering must be checked together. The allowable capacity is site-specific and does not simply triple because three phases are present.

Our three-phase supply and metering upgrade service reviews the coordinated scope for Sydney properties. Network availability and approval, the condition of the installation and the equipment requirements determine what is feasible; the presence of three-phase wiring in the street is not an approval for your home.

Sequence the project around confirmed requirements

Agree which provider handles the network application, site works and meter request, then coordinate the appliance installer’s work. A three-phase meter records the supply; it does not increase a circuit’s capacity or make an incorrectly connected appliance suitable. Ask the electrician to explain the proposed distribution of loads without attempting to change circuits yourself.

Include interruption planning and any additional board or mains works in the quote. Retail account or tariff questions belong with the retailer, and the cost of running the appliances still depends on energy use and your plan. Treat a supply upgrade as an assessed capacity decision, not a guaranteed bill-saving measure.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Does every induction cooktop need three phase?

No. Requirements depend on the exact model and manufacturer’s connection options. Ask a licensed electrician to assess the model and the household’s combined demand.

Does three phase automatically triple my usable capacity?

No. Approved supply capacity, mains, protection and load distribution all matter. A site-specific assessment is needed.

Should I buy the appliances before requesting a supply quote?

Obtain the model specifications first, but confirm supply feasibility before committing to equipment that requires a connection upgrade.
