Old Switchboard Blocking Your Smart Meter Install? Here’s Why

The most common reason a smart meter install gets rejected on the day isn’t the meter — it’s the board it has to go on.

The Problem: “We Can’t Install on This Board”

Metering installers reject jobs every day in Sydney for the same short list of reasons: asbestos-backed meter panels, ceramic fuses instead of circuit breakers, no room on the board for the new meter, deteriorated wiring, or unsafe access. The installer photographs the board, marks the job “unable to complete” and leaves.

You’re then in limbo — the retailer won’t send anyone back until the board is fixed, but fixing the board involves service-side work most electricians can’t do.

The Solution: Rectify the Board and Meter in One Visit

The efficient path is a single job that upgrades the switchboard — new panel, modern protection, safe meter position — and completes the meter installation at the same time. That requires a Level 2 ASP, because isolating supply and reconnecting the metering is network-side work.

We do exactly this across Sydney: asbestos panel replacement (using licensed removal processes), board upgrades and the smart meter install in one coordinated visit, so there’s no second rejection.

The Result: A Safe Board and a Working Smart Meter

You end up with a compliant modern switchboard, protection that actually trips when it should, and the smart meter installed and registered — rather than months of ping-pong between retailer, installer and electrician.

Had an install knocked back? Send us the installer’s rejection notes or a photo of your board on 0466 125 125 and we’ll quote the rectification.

COMMON QUESTIONS

How do I know if my meter panel contains asbestos?

Black or dark brown compressed panels in boards from before the late 1980s are the usual suspects. Don’t drill or disturb it — have it assessed and replaced through licensed processes.

Will my power be off during a board upgrade?

Yes, for part of the day — the supply is isolated while the board is rebuilt and the meter fitted. We confirm the outage window with you when booking.
