Solar and Battery Metering Handover: What to Confirm with Your Installer and Retailer

The system working in an app is only part of handover. Keep the installation records and confirm that the grid metering and retail account match the project.

Record what was actually commissioned

At handover, ask the installer for the final solar, inverter and battery equipment details, the commissioning date and the applicable electrical compliance documentation. The installed configuration should be recorded, not just the original sales proposal. A substitution, additional battery or changed inverter setting can matter when you later ask for service or join a VPP.

Keep the network connection conditions with the installer’s documents. Ask the installer to explain any export limit, system-control requirement and backup arrangement in plain language. Knowing which circuits, if any, have backup capability is more useful than assuming the battery powers the whole house during an outage.

Confirm the metering handoff separately

Write down whether the meter was retained, reconfigured or exchanged and who completed or coordinated the work. If an exchange occurred, keep the meter identification and the work reference supplied through the provider. The battery commissioning date and the metering completion date may not be the same.

If a meter or board task remains open, our solar-and-battery metering coordination service can help define the electrical scope and the installer/provider handoff. Do not assume a successful inverter startup means every metering and account step has been completed.

Your handover folder

  • Final equipment list, commissioning record and applicable compliance certificates.
  • Connection approval/conditions and installer explanation of export settings.
  • Meter-work reference, configuration status and any outstanding appointments.
  • Warranty, support contacts, operating instructions and backup limitations.

Do not lose an existing controlled load

Tell the installer and retailer about any electric hot water, pool equipment or heating on a controlled-load arrangement before works begin. Ask the electrical contractor to confirm that the intended circuits remain correctly arranged and the retailer to confirm the corresponding account setup. These are linked but separate checks.

Controlled load is not necessarily an overnight-only circuit, and it may not be supplied from the battery in the way general household circuits are. If hot water behaves differently after commissioning, report the change with the work dates; do not alter switching or wiring to test a theory. The installer and retailer can direct the investigation.

Review the account and first complete bill

Ask the retailer to confirm import/export recording, agreed feed-in arrangements, any controlled load and the effective date of the current plan. Ask how to request data and whether the first bill includes estimates or only part of the changed period. Do not expect the solar app’s generation total to equal the export credit line.

Compare a complete post-commissioning period once the relevant data is available. Keep unresolved items in a short list with an owner: installer for equipment/monitoring, retailer for billing/account questions and the appointed provider for meter investigations. A handover is clearer when each item has a named contact rather than a general promise that everything is “all set”.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Should commissioning and meter exchange happen on the same date?

They may be coordinated, but can be separate appointments. Confirm dependencies and keep both dates and references rather than assuming one proves the other is complete.

Who confirms that controlled load is still billed correctly?

The electrical contractor checks the physical arrangement; the retailer confirms account and tariff configuration. Report any changed appliance behaviour without modifying the wiring yourself.

Does the battery app prove my bill is correct?

No. The app and meter can measure different flows and periods. Confirm the retailer’s import/export data and plan before comparing the first complete bill.

Close the metering gaps at handover

Have an outstanding meter or board requirement? Bring the installer’s scope and retailer reference for a coordinated assessment.
