After a solar install, many owners are surprised that their bill shows no export credits. The cause is almost always the meter: an old accumulation meter can’t measure electricity flowing out to the grid, so every kilowatt-hour you export is given away unrecorded.
Worse, some old meters actually run forward when you export, so you can be charged for power you generated yourself. Every week on the wrong meter is money lost.
The fix is a meter changeover to a bidirectional smart meter that records imports and exports separately. Your retailer can arrange this — often free — but the wait can stretch out well beyond your solar installer’s handover.
