Solar Installed but Not Earning Feed-in Credits? It’s Probably Your Meter

Solar systems can’t earn feed-in credits until the meter can measure exports. Here’s how the changeover works.

The Problem: Panels Working, Bill Unchanged

After a solar install, many owners are surprised that their bill shows no export credits. The cause is almost always the meter: an old accumulation meter can’t measure electricity flowing out to the grid, so every kilowatt-hour you export is given away unrecorded.

Worse, some old meters actually run forward when you export, so you can be charged for power you generated yourself. Every week on the wrong meter is money lost.

The Solution: A Bidirectional Smart Meter Changeover

The fix is a meter changeover to a bidirectional smart meter that records imports and exports separately. Your retailer can arrange this — often free — but the wait can stretch out well beyond your solar installer’s handover.

As a Level 2 ASP, Smart Meter Australia performs solar meter changeovers directly across Sydney, coordinating with your retailer so the export register is set up correctly and your feed-in tariff starts as soon as possible.

The Result: Credits From Day One of the New Meter

Once the bidirectional meter is in and registered, exports appear on your very next bill and your solar starts paying for itself the way the installer promised.

If your solar has been in for weeks with no credits, don’t keep waiting — call 0466 125 125 and we’ll get the changeover moving.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Can my solar installer change the meter?

Not usually. Solar accreditation and metering authorisation are different things — metering work in NSW requires a Level 2 ASP. Many solar companies subcontract this step, which is where delays creep in.

Will I be back-paid for exports before the meter change?

No — exports that weren’t measured can’t be credited. That’s why it pays to have the meter changeover booked before or immediately after your solar is switched on.
