What Does a Smart Meter Measure? Import, Export and Interval Data

A smart meter measures electricity crossing your grid connection. It does not automatically tell you what each appliance uses or what your bill should cost.

Energy is not the same as power

Your electricity bill usually measures energy in kilowatt-hours, or kWh. Power, measured in kilowatts (kW), describes how quickly energy is being used at a particular moment. A hypothetical 2 kW appliance running steadily for half an hour uses 1 kWh. That example explains the units; it is not a prediction of your appliances’ actual consumption.

An interval meter records energy over successive time periods, rather than only a cumulative total between visits. A cumulative display and an interval file can describe the same consumption in different ways. The meter model and the data supplied to you determine what you can see: do not assume a screen label or register code means the same thing on every meter.

Import and export describe the grid boundary

Import is electricity coming from the grid into the property. Export is electricity leaving the property for the grid, such as surplus solar generation. In a typical net-metered solar installation, the meter does not count solar used directly by the household as grid import or export. It also does not separately identify the dishwasher, oven or battery.

For example, if a solar system generates 10 kWh over a period and 6 kWh is used on site, the remaining 4 kWh may be exported in a simplified system without storage or other losses. The solar app’s generation total and the meter’s export total should not be expected to match. Older gross-metered arrangements need a different interpretation.

A measurement becomes a bill through your plan

The retailer applies your contract to the metering data. A bill may combine general usage, separately recorded controlled load, export credits, daily charges and demand charges. A smart meter can supply time-based measurements without deciding which plan is best for you. Installation does not guarantee a lower bill or immediate live data in an app.

When a total looks wrong, check the same start and end dates, units, channel names and time convention. Ask whether the bill or downloaded data includes estimates or substituted readings. Communications and data-processing issues can still occur with a smart meter; a remote-read capability is not a promise that every bill will use actual data.

Questions for your retailer

  • Which data channel represents general import, export and any controlled load?
  • What interval length, time zone and daylight-saving convention does the file use?
  • How do I request usage data, and are the values actual, estimated or substituted?

When the physical installation needs attention

If your project needs different metering capability, our smart meter installation and site preparation service can assess the board and coordinate the installation request. A billing dispute should start with the retailer, not an assumption that replacing the meter will fix it.

Keep a copy of the bill and relevant data period. Only photograph equipment from a safe, normally accessible position; never remove covers or seals to find a register. The appointed metering provider handles metering equipment investigations through the appropriate coordination process.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Does a smart meter measure each appliance?

Not individually through standard grid import/export measurements. Appliance-level information needs separate monitoring; it should not be inferred from the main meter total alone.

Does export equal my solar generation?

Usually not in a net-metered installation. Solar used in the house or stored in a battery does not cross the grid boundary as export. Confirm whether your site has net or gross metering.

Can smart-meter bills still be estimated?

Yes. Missing or delayed data can require estimated or substituted values. Ask your retailer which readings were used and how a correction is handled.
