Why Is Your Retailer Taking So Long to Install a Smart Meter?

Retailer smart meter installs are often free — but you join a queue. When timing matters, there’s a faster path.

The Problem: Stuck in the Rollout Queue

Retailers schedule smart meter installs through third-party metering coordinators, batching jobs by area. If your job needs anything extra — switchboard access issues, asbestos panels, rewiring, or a defect — it can be rejected on the day and rescheduled, restarting the wait.

That’s workable if you’re in no hurry. It’s a real problem if your solar installer is booked, your granny flat tenant is moving in, or settlement on a new build depends on power being connected.

The Solution: Know When to Go Private

If the free retailer install suits your timeline, take it — we’ll tell you so. Where it doesn’t, a Level 2 ASP can carry out the metering work directly: new connections, solar changeovers, granny flat meters, relocations and defect rectification are all jobs retailers generally won’t prioritise or won’t do at all.

Because we’re accredited on Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy and Essential Energy, we can also fix the site issues — switchboard, service mains, defects — that cause retailer installs to be rejected in the first place.

The Result: Your Timeline, Not the Queue’s

Booking directly means the meter goes in when your project needs it, and any board or wiring issues are dealt with in the same visit rather than triggering another rejection.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Is a private install worth it if the retailer one is free?

It depends on timing and scope. For a simple like-for-like swap with no deadline, the retailer route is usually fine. For new connections, solar deadlines, granny flats or boards with issues, a private Level 2 install is often the only practical path.

Why did the retailer’s installer refuse to change my meter?

Common reasons are unsafe or asbestos meter panels, insufficient space on the board, wiring defects or access problems. Those need rectification work — which we do — before the meter exchange can proceed.
