Ausgrid, Endeavour or Essential: Which Network Are You On?

Your electricity retailer is your choice — your network distributor isn’t. Knowing which one covers your address matters for any metering job.

The Problem: Retailer vs Network Confusion

When something needs doing at the meter or the street connection, people call their retailer — and often get bounced around, because the poles, wires and connection rules belong to the network distributor, not the retailer. Sydney is split: Ausgrid covers the city’s east, north and inner areas, Endeavour Energy covers the west and south-west, and Essential Energy takes over in regional NSW.

Applications, technical standards and connection processes differ between networks, so not knowing yours slows every job down.

The Solution: Identify Your Distributor (It’s on Your Bill)

Your distributor is printed on your electricity bill — usually near the faults and emergencies number. Your NMI (National Metering Identifier) on the bill also encodes the network. If in doubt, your postcode is a strong guide: Inner West, North Shore, Eastern Suburbs and Central Coast lean Ausgrid; Parramatta, Penrith, Liverpool, Campbelltown and the Blue Mountains lean Endeavour.

It matters because metering and connection work must follow your network’s rules and be performed by an ASP accredited on that network. Smart Meter Australia is authorised on all three, so wherever you are in Greater Sydney and beyond, the accreditation question is already answered.

The Result: The Right Process, First Time

Knowing your network means applications go to the right place, the correct technical standards are applied, and there’s no mid-job discovery that the installer isn’t accredited for your area.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Can I choose my network distributor?

No — distributors are geographic monopolies. You choose your retailer; the network serving your address is fixed.

Does the network affect my metering options?

The metering technology is the same, but connection applications, service rules and some technical requirements differ by network — which is why your installer must be accredited on yours.
